The womanizer meets his match!!!This was another Classic Julie James. Her books follow a winning pattern without being repetitive or boring. Ms. James excels at light, fun, modern romances set in the real world. The characters are real - albeit attractive, smart, and successful - people. No wimps, either make or female! They're light - not too serious - but with excellent character and plot development and HEAs. The dialogue is clever but also realistic. I LOVE the dialogue - especially Ms. James' heroines; they have the type of dialogue I like to think I have: Witty, sarcastic, sometimes biting, but not cruel.
Another hallmark of Ms. James's novels is that the relationship develops over time. Instant attraction, but not insta-love. The H grows over time. In the book some people may not like what's going on with the h while the H and h get together, but it makes sense in the context, it's honest, and it's kind of funny. Besides it's necessary to give the H a kick in the pants. Yes if the roles were reversed I might have a problem, but considering what the H is like in the beginning, he deserves it!! Yes I'm being intentionally coy so as not to spoil anything. No artificial drama. No ridiculous displays. No trite plot devices. Just light, fun, sexy romance.
Another trait of a Julie James: her books also are rich in detail with the background of the story - frequently law enforcement, lawyers, big business, etc. In one book it was wine tasting (and she may have gone overboard with the details in that book, but at least she gets the details right!!!!). Her accuracy in a range of topics is exciting and original. (Though I did catch an error about the law in one of her early books!!! Tsk, tsk! That is actually her area!!) In this case, I enjoyed the short lesson into private equity companies.
You also catch up with a few of the couples from prior books, but you don't need to have read those books to enjoy this book. Though I might go re-read them to enjoy their getting to know you phase again.
And, as expected, her books have excellent English without typos and grammatical mistakes!!!
This was an excellent two hour read. I can't wait for the next one. Julie James is an auto-buy for me.

What I liked…
-We're finally back to the FBI world
-The cameos from my favorite Special Agents (from previous books)
-Getting to know a little more of a main couple of one of Julie's stand alone books (FINALLY A REFERENCE TO THAT WORLD!)
-The friendship between Vaughn, Huxley and Cade. Loved reading their interactions. There was a glimpse of them in the previous book and here's explored more. Loved it.
-The family interaction with Vaughn and his parents
-Vaughn. He may not be my favorite FBI agent but I enjoyed getting to know him. How he was confident about what he had (personality and looks) but never got to arrogant and obnoxious limits. And how he also had a side that no one (not even him) knew he had. I loved how he cared for those he loved and how in spite of some of them having a bad image of him, he didn't let that stop him from helping. He stood up.
-Actions spoke louder than words when it came to Vaughn and Sidney. I knew the moment they became friends, when they fell in love and when they suffered when they were apart. Not every author can achieve this so props to Julie for being able to do it.
What I didn't like…
-I was dying to read the crossover to one of Julie's stand alone books and when it happened it was so uneventful for me (view spoiler)
-Sidney's job. I found it boring so I skipped those parts.
-The fact that Sidney was going on dates when she was sleeping with Vaughn. I'm not a fan of these kind of interactions. I don't like them when heroes do it and I don't like it when heroines do it.
-Sidney. She was not bad and I loved how protective and caring she was of her sister but when she wasn't interacting with people, I wouldn't care for her and I hate that.
I love when heroines interest me first as individuals and then in their interactions with other people. Sidney failed to make me care for her as an individual.
-The FBI case never got resolved. It caught my attention and I hated it never got a resolution.
OVERALL
I'm so happy Julie returned to writing FBI agents and I hope it's not the last one from her. I enjoyed this book in spite of what I didn't like and I managed to finish it in one sitting which is a good thing in my manual. But I don't think it had something so different to make it stand out from her previous books.
I went back and reread the early Julie James books and then read this one; sadly, it just isn't as good. It's a pretty decent read, I didn't throw it against the wall or stomp all over it in frustration, but it was just sort of blah. I hate to say this but it is definitely time to get away from the FBI agents/US Attorney series, I think it has run it's course. The characters are bland and the story is pretty straightforward and very little got in the way of the H/h's HEA. The path to this HEA was pretty straightforward and filled with expensive restaurants and expensive shoes and designer labels, no real angst or depth of feeling.
The real problem for me was that no one sounded real in this book I doubt that FBI Special Agents keep explicitly thinking to themselves that they are undercover officers, and frankly, I really doubt they go around telling strangers (and non strangers) that they are involved in an ongoing under cover operation. Every time Vaughn mentioned this (and he did so a lot) I cringed. Sidney was cocky and a great fund manager and though it was quite interesting to read what it was she did, it didn’t really add to the story so it just felt like filler. In all, this was a just okay read. I’ll still read Julie James but I hope we’ll get a new cast of characters next time.
