Because I liked the first two books in the Out of Time series so well, I have looked forward to reading this installment since it came out earlier this year. While it did not contain the time-traveling elements of the first two books or a character from the present day, other than Abbess Hildegarde, I didn't find those omissions to affect the story adversely in any way. In fact, this book could be read as a standalone without having read the first two (although the mention of Hildegarde being from the 20th century will pique a reader's interest, so they will WANT to read the other books).

I think I like this book best of all! It draws the reader into the 12th century so seamlessly, including such a variety of settings and situations that one's senses are constantly stimulated. I've read quite a lot of historical fiction from this era, but this one was so immersive, I never once felt pulled out of the time and place. There is gritty realism, from the day-to-day struggle to survive to court intrigue and danger, but the heart of the story is the love story of Lady Isabella and Sir Giles, and a beautiful love story it is! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the early Middle Ages who also enjoys a good love story (not a romance in the traditional sense). I love these character so much, it makes me want to find that time-traveling tree near Sparnstow Abbey so I can go visit them....
